The war was between the Union consisting of 23 free states and the Confederate comprising of 11 southern states, and 5 border states. The motive behind the Civil War was the concern over the institution of slavery within the eleven Southern states and the steps to expand slavery into the western states. The south infrastructure was based on the production of cotton as its staple for economic development. The picking of cotton by the slaves was the main labor force in the south.
